Chardonnay 2023

Double Gold, Best of Class Awards at the 2024 Orange County Wine Competition. We make our special Chardonnay from grapes sourced from a neighboring vineyard in El Dorado. In 2022 we were unable to make it due to a major frost event, and this year the bears broke in and started eating these gorgeous grapes, but fortunately we beat them for enough to make our wine! Our "Chablis style" Chardonnay 2023 is a zesty white with a lighter body, crisp acidity and citrus finish. Aromas of apple, pear and tropical fruit flavors. Perfect for such foods as chicken, fresh salads, grilled fish and a lighter pasta dish. No oak used. 13.3% alcohol. Only 119 cases produced.

Appellation:

El Dorado County

Winemaker Notes:

Harvest September 27, 2023, quite late for white grapes and in line with the cooler temperatures in the vineyard at that elevation. Brix of 22.5, pH 3.5. Whole-cluster pressed in our gentle bladder press, fermented in Flextank Apollo egg-shaped tanks, slow fermentation and constant stirring via gas released in convection, extracting maximum flavors and enhancing aromatics. Secondary malolactic fermentation applied to give it a smooth finish.

Vineyard Notes:

We sourced the grapes for our Chardonnay from a nearby vineyard at an elevation of 2,900 feet. The 40+ year old vines grow in a cooler bowl and often the fruit is lost to frost and in some years to bears! We were fortunate to secure a small allocation and beat the bears to the fruit this year.
