Zinfandel 2022

Gold, Best Zinfandel at the 2024 Peninsula Underground Under the Radar Competition. La Mesa’s very first release of Zinfandel. For many years we've been asked by club members to make a big bold Zinfandel, a wine often sought out in Amador County. Anchoring our newest “Project Big Bold” releases, a notch up in boldness over our other reds. Complex notes of black cherry, red plum, pepper, caramel, vanilla, tobacco and brown spices. Smooth, dry, low-tannin finish that makes it a seductive pairing with hearty meals. Aged with 40% New French oak. 15.0% alcohol. 202 cases produced.

More Details

Appellation:

El Dorado County

Winemaker Notes:

Harvest on September 9 at higher sugar level of 28.5. Gently crushed, fermented with a special yeast chosen to enhance flavors and smooth mouthfeel. Grapes punched-down by hand over two weeks and gently pressed using 360-degree bladder press to minimize tannins. Aged 40% New French oak equivalent, bottled in May 2024. We expect this wine to age very nicely for years, yet also ready to drink now.

Vineyard Notes:

La Mesa's Zinfandel anchors a new series of wines we call "Project Big Bold". For many years we've been asked by club members to make a big bold Zinfandel, a wine often sought out in Amador County, using our winemaking techniques (Flextank technology, low sulfites, low tannins). Zinfandel grapes sourced from neighboring Linebarier Vineyard in El Dorado. Premium "FPS13" silk-like clone, appropriately named "Red Silk".
