Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2023

Our very first release of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 2023 we set out on a journey to make a Cabernet to rival those in Napa. It started with seeking out and discovering a secret vineyard planted on perfect soils at high elevation in Fiddletown, Amador, growing two "cult" clones of Cab grapes, 04 and 337, the same ones in some of the most reputable wines in Napa. But that wasn't the end - other key wines would be needed to make our perfect blend: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. We searched far and wide for the perfect vineyards in Amador and El Dorado for all these grapes. What you are tasting is a true "Mountain Cab" grown nearby, at high elevation, and made right here. Fine-tuned with 11% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, aged in 60% new French oak. 13.5% alcohol. 224 cases produced.

Appellation:

Shenandoah Valley

Winemaker Notes:

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of two premium Cabernet clone grapes – 337 found in “cult” Napa and Bordeaux wines and 04 found in the best Argentinian Cabs and also some top Napa wines. We searched hard in the foothills around us and discovered these grapes at a neighboring “secret” high-elevation vineyard in Fiddletown, growing perfectly on granitic soil and a cool east facing slope. The two clones were kept separate and fermented with two different yeasts we chose after careful research on some of the best Napa wines. One of these clone/yeast combinations (337) became our “Grand Reserve” Cab and the others were blended together for our Reserve Cab and fine-tuned with 11% Merlot, 6% Cab Franc, 5% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Aged in 60% new French oak.

Vineyard Notes:

We set out to find two highly sought after “cult” clones, 04 and 337, of Cabernet grapes in Amador County and El Dorado County, growing at elevation and benefitting from cooler temperatures. Low and behold we found these clones at a vineyard just a few minutes away and planted on perfect soils. These are the same clones as some of the most reputable wines in Napa.
