Petite Sirah 2021

Double Gold at the 2025 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Our Petite Sirah is the culmination of years of hard work and patience. We planted our vines in a new hillside vineyard in 2013, taking five years to reach full production, with our first estate release in 2019. Ours is a quintessential Sierra Foothills Petite Sirah, with rich, powerful flavor and intense dark color. Often used in blending to give a burst of life to other lighter wines, in its pure form this is a robust wine with notes of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, black cherries and spice on the nose moving into black tea and red cherries on the palate. We make ours with subtle French oak. Pairs brilliantly with steak, pork roast, grilled lamb and chili. This is a wine you can age with confidence.  15.5% alcohol. 141 cases produced.

Appellation:

Shenandoah Valley

Winemaker Notes:

The 2021 season was characterized by drought, with less than half the normal rainfall ending early in March. This definitely stressed the vines, but we believe also enhanced flavors. Harvested by hand on October 7, 2021 at a Brix of 25.5 and pH 3.5. After gently crushing and destemming the grapes, we hand removed remaining stems from the must to reduce tannins and herbal flavors, fermented and punched-down the wine manually over 2 weeks. Gently bladder-pressed. Special yeast imparts a rich, lush, balanced mouthfeel. Secondary malolactic fermentation over the next few weeks. Wine aged nearly 2 years, bottled in March 2023. We infused French oak, equivalent to about 30% new oak.

Vineyard Notes:

Our Estate Petite Sirah grows on a steep hillside at 2,000-foot altitude in the granitic and volcanic soil of our vineyard estate in the Shenandoah Valley of the Sierra Foothills. It is grafted on special drought-tolerant rootstock which allows it to dig deep in this soil for water and we dry farm it. It thrives in the warm daytime breezes from the Central Valley and cool Sierra evenings, a 30-degree swing in temperature. We grow the "03" clone, originally from the Kunde Vineyards in Sonoma, expressing aromatics of blueberry and violets with a tannin structure that is more delicate for Petite Sirah.
